As the third Poet Laureate of Houston, D.E.E.P.'s heart for community and art is unmatched. A graduate of the University of Michigan, Deborah D.E.E.P. Mouton has  over 16 years of arts administration experience. From serving as a Project Manager to being a Program Director to coordinating multiple community festivals, she has a unique balance between the artistic vision and its logistic execution. With a Master's in Education from the University of St. Thomas, her work in and out of the classroom gives her a special insight that translates the arts with fresh eyes.

As an artist, Ranked the #2 Best female poet in the world in 2008, D.E.E.P. has established herself as a notable nationally-known poet and author. She published her first collection of poetry, "Heartstrings and Lamentations," at the tender age of 19. She went on to compete in her first national poetry slam in her senior year of college as a member of the 2004 Collegiate Poetry Slam Team for the University of Michigan.  After falling in love with the National poetry slam team she moved to Houston and became a member of the 2007 Houston Poetry Slam and 2008 H-Town National Poetry Slam Teams.

Jordan Simpson, Associate Director

Coach of the top 5 nationally ranked poetry slam team, Houston VIP, 3 time TEDx presenter, published author, and regional poetry slam champion, Jordan Simpson, is a culmination of Bronx, NY grit, Jamaican spice, and God’s mercy. The award winning slam poet, musician, and activist has served as a 2-year Future Corps International Youth Ambassador, the Brave New Voices Climate Change and Public Health Competition Host at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, and as the workshop curator for the Brave New Voices International summit on Poverty and Economic Justice. Currently obtaining his doctorate of pharmacy at Texas Southern University, Jordan Simpson serves as the Humanitarian Chair on the executive board of the university’s Student Society of Health System Pharmacist and the Mental Health Chair on the executive board of the university’s Student National Pharmaceutical Association.  

Erica Cuscina, Houston VIP Program Manager

Originally from New York, Erica Nicole is a nationally ranked poet, adolescent psychiatric Registered Nurse, Certified Child & Adolescent Trauma Professional, and American Sign Language Interpreter student. This three-time member of the Houston VIP Slam team hosts writing and performance workshops for youth an adult audiences. As an author of three short length books of poetry, she has been named one of Texas' Best Emerging Poets by Z publishing House. Erica serves on the Board of Directors for the Invisible Strings Bookshop- a bookstore and community space for queer youth in Oregon.

Brandon Harrison, Director of Public Relations and Sponsorships

Brandon Harrison is a spoken word artist, host, and educator who loves engaging in the booming arts scenes around the country. This creator and host of Kentucky's largest yearly poetry competition, "Winter Soul-Spit Slam," also coached the Young Poets of Louisville for three years. Author of "I Wrote on Walls Because I Never Got a Happy Meal" on 310 Brown Street, Brandon loves to tell stories and give others the ability to do the same.

Joshua Mouton- Director of Finance

With a degree in Accounting and a love for graphic design, Joshua Mouton's expertise shines through. He manages funds and fundraising efforts for yearly programming and annual events. 

His eye for design allows him to create our inventive website design and serve as a consultant for marketing efforts.
